Otomycosis

Otomycosis is an infection of the ear that can be caused by several types of fungus, but most infections are related to the Aspergillus species (Medical News Today). Coming in contact with a fungus doesn’t always pose a problem for people, however some might catch an infection more easily than others due to a compromised immune system. Also, as fungi thrive in damp, warm places, otomycosis is more common in hot or tropical climates. Other risk factors include internal trauma to the ear, chronic skin conditions (such as eczema), participating in water sports, or lack of earwax (which helps protect the ear canal from infections). Some symptoms of otomycosis include:

  • Hearing loss

  • Itching

  • Redness

  • Swelling or inflammation

  • Discharge from the ear (white, yellow, black, or green in color)

  • Ringing in the ears

While it is most common for only one ear to be affected, it is possible for symptoms to occur in both ears at the same time. While complications are uncommon, they might occur in people affected by compromised immune systems or other conditions. If left inadequately treated otomycosis may become a chronic condition. If left untreated it may perforate the ear drum and migrate further into the inner ear, and infections at this stage require a more drastic approach to treatment.
