Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is "a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Symptoms include breathing difficulty, cough, mucus (sputum) production and wheezing" (Mayo Clinic). COPD is typically caused by long-term exposure to irritating agents such as cigarette smoke. COPD increases your risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer and other conditions. Symptoms of COPD may include:

  • Frequent coughing or a cough that produces a lot mucus
  • Wheezing
  • A whistling or squeaky sound when you breathe
  • Shortness of breath, especially with physical activity
