Study Up

The term “dementia” refers to a group of symptoms that are caused by brain damage. There are different types of dementia - Alzheimer's disease (AD), Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body dementia, Frontotemporal lobar degeneration, Parkinson’s disease with dementia, and HIV-associated dementia.

The most common type, Alzheimer's disease, affects more than 5 million Americans and causes memory loss, confusion, trouble with thinking or reasoning, language problems, changes in behavior, mood swings, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, hallucinations, delusions, sleep disturbances, orientation, mobility, and other cognitive impairments. AD accounts for more than 90% of all cases of dementia. It usually begins after age 60 in people who have had a good education and has no family history. There may be periods when there is improvement followed by worsening again as the disease progresses. In some patients, depression can occur before other signs appear.
