Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT or PSVT)

"Tachycardia is when your heart beats faster than normal, even when you’re not doing anything. Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) is when your fast heartbeat starts in the upper, or supraventricular, chambers of the heart. It’s also known as supraventricular tachycardia. PSVT is most common in younger people, especially women." (WebMD). Certain factors, such as alcohol consumption or smoking, can increase the likelihood of developing this condition. (University of Maryland Medical Center). Symptoms of PSVT can last several minutes or hours and include:

  • Palpitations, a sensation that you can feel your heart beating rapidly or erratically

  • Anxiety

  • Chest tightness

  • Rapid pulse

  • Shortness of breath

  • Dizziness

  • Fainting (University of Maryland Medical Center)
