Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)

Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland fails to produce enough thyroid hormone. The thyroid controls your metabolism which again affects bodily functions such as temperature, heartbeat, and the ability to burn calories. When the thyroid gland produces less thyroid hormone certain processes slow down and may produce symptoms such as:

  • Changes in the menstrual cycle

  • Constipation

  • Depression

  • Dry hair and hair loss

  • Dry skin

  • Fatigue

  • Greater sensitivity to cold

  • Slow heart rate

  • Swelling of the thyroid gland (goiter)

  • Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (WebMD)
